Leaves in Flight

leaves, like yellow kites
threaded on the wind
thrown to a clear blue sky

Photo Leaves in Flight by Benjamin Barnett

Steam from a manhole cover

Lovers, in cold morning shade

Dance along cobblestone paths,

legs and arms intertwined

serenaded by a cacophony of rustling leaves

A crisp snowfall

while you play a cello suite,
the moon must be crying

dappled light--
he slips the glinting ring
on her finger

Rush

moving quickly -
tree limbs and
people
in the park
children star jumping -
maple leaves falling

river mist--
scullers row in unison
geese in their wake

Carrying my twigs
to the compost bin
I meet a man with a bag of leaves

closeness felt-
stars covered by our breath
in october air
in today's mail
adverts for planting bulbs
against next spring
cutting back
the bushes ~
watched closely by crow

dry red leaf
floats, flutters, falls
its last dance

the ground littered with dead leaves
--all those yesterdays

almost a friend
this funeral

Bill was one of the most warm-hearted people I have ever met. Despite being one of the giants of haiku he was the most accessible and humble of people.

If you do not own a copy of the Haiku Handbook I urge you to buy a copy:

I have lost someone very dear to me, and he was always my mentor.
